Cars on Computers
It seems that these days, we all, whether we are old or young, tall or short, use our computers for an exorbitant amount of time every day. This need, or for some, passion for the virtual life is what drives the production of today's crop of video games. And because we are an automotive website, the motorsport games in particular. Since video games have been invented, car guys have wanted a way to experience driving cars from around the world all in the comfort of their own home. And today, that life is better than ever
The long living Need For Speed brand has been around for as long as we can remember. Starting off with very simple graphics and simple cars, they have worked their way to having some the most cutting edge graphics and the most customizable games around. In fact, that is what is really driving the series these days. Since the original Need For Speed Underground came out about 4 years ago, the tuner crowd has been taking thousands of parts from hundreds of different manufacturers and putting them on cars they could never afford, almost like an artistic outlet. Now, you can go online and see some of the creations of NFS users. Just now, they are starting to promote their newest version, NFS: Carbon, with one of the most advanced modifier programs available in a computer/video game, right behind the almighty Gran Turismo series...
There is no way to top the well deserved success of the GT series, with millions of copies sold all around the world, it's creators have worked for the past decade on making the most realistic driving experience available outside the real thing and have blown us away with each new iteration. They have spent so much time and $ getting all the graphics just right, that many professional drivers now use the game to train themselves on unfamiliar circuits without the inherent danger. This is made possible with the most realistic automobile physics setup ever created. But the scenery and graphics are only the half of it. GT has always prided itself on it's vast array of vehicles from all around the world, from Alfa Romeos to Volvos, as well as thousands of performance parts to up the speed of your racer.
So, why are these games so popular? The answer seems to lie in people’s desire to play with what they can't have. In all of these games, you can spend millions of virtual dollars pimpin' out your ride, or spend those millions to buy your ride. Ordinary people are able to drive Ferrari's, Porsches, and Lamborghini's, without having to steal them. So, auto fanatics, don't fret. With the advent of new games such as NFS Carbon and Gran Turismo 4, it seems that your desire for driving will be virtually fulfilled for a long time to come.

Ben,
Excellent article. Is there a way to add more games to WheelsTV's arcade? Maybe video promos of NFS Carbon and Gran Turismo 4, too. What do you think?
